English in Medicine

The course is designed for students and staff in the medical and nursing fields who wish to improve their reading, writing, listening and speaking skills for everyday medical and academic settings.

Objectives:
On successful completion of the course students will be able to:

  • read medical texts with the help of a dictionary;
  • give straightforward consultations in English;
  • write brief patient history and consultation notes;
  • compose an abstract for a talk;
  • deliver short oral presentations.

The course is based on the set book supplemented by additional reading materials with a medical theme. Questions regarding vocabulary and text organisation will be answered mainly by e-mail, allowing a maximum amount of time in class to develop speaking and writing skills through discussions based on the texts, role plays, presentations and summaries. Grammar practice will be possible on an individual basis as needed. Course topics will be chosen with the participants. Each participant will have to make a presentation on a medical subject and be prepared to deal with questions from the floor on that theme.

Entry requirement: min. 2 semesters of medicine or health sciences.
