Terms and Conditions of the Language Center of the University of Basel

Scope

These terms and conditions apply to all registrations for courses offered by the Language Center of the University of Basel.

Registration

Eligible to participate in the courses offered by the Language Center are the groups of people listed under Eligibility for Admission. A registration for a course is binding and is carried out online on the website of the Language Center. By registering, you accept these general terms and conditions. After registration, you will receive an automatic registration confirmation by e-mail.

For courses that require previous knowledge, a placement test is required prior to registration. You will find all the information about this in the respective course description.

The registration deadline is five working days before the start of the course.

It is possible to register after the registration deadline if spots are still available. This can be done by sending a request to info-sprachenzentrum@clutterunibas.ch or in person at the reception desk of the Language Center.

Missed sessions

Missed sessions are counted as absences. Sessions missed because of registering after the registration deadline are counted as absences.

Sessions that are not attended cannot be made up and will not be refunded.

The maximum number of absences allowed can be found in the respective course description. Exceeding the maximum number of allowed absences may result in not earning credit points for the respective course and/or in not receiving a certificate of attendance.

Course confirmation, course cancellation, splitting a course

The course confirmation with information about the course (course materials, course room, etc.) will be sent by e-mail to the participants at least five working days before the course starts.

The Language Center may cancel a course at short notice due to insufficient enrollment, cancellations by the course lecturer, or for other reasons. In this case, there will not be any costs for the participants. The Language Center is not liable for any damages resulting from cancellations at short notice.

In the event of high demand, the Language Center may set up parallel courses to distribute the participants among additional courses. If a course is split into multiple courses, it is possible that the parallel courses will not be taught by the lecturer named in the course description.

Payment of the course fee

An invoice for the course will be sent after the start of the course (with a payment deadline of 30 days).

Course sessions

As a rule, courses at the Language Center take place in person. Courses that are offered digitally are marked with a corresponding indication. By registering, you confirm that you have taken note of the currently valid conditions for the course sessions and of how the sessions will be held. The Language Center reserves the right to switch from in-person to digital instruction at any time.

Deregistration

The following costs will be incurred with a

  • deregistration up to five working days before the start of the course:  CHF 50.00
  • deregistration starting on the fourth working day before the start of the course:  total course fee

Deregistrations must be submitted in writing to info-sprachenzentrum@clutterunibas.ch. A verbal or written deregistration with the course lecturer is not sufficient.

Participation, exclusion

Participating in courses requires that course fees be paid on time and that no course fees be outstanding. If reminders to pay a course fee have been necessary, the Language Center may require that course fees for future courses be paid prior to the course or immediately.
Participating in courses also requires impeccable behavior and compliance with the university’s code of conduct. The Language Center may exclude students from the Language Center if the code of conduct is violated; § 11 of the student regulations remains reserved.

Amendment of the general terms and conditions

The Language Center reserves the right to change these general terms and conditions at any time. The version of the terms and conditions valid at the time a participant registers for a course is the one that applies to that participant.

Severability clause

If any of these terms and conditions become invalid or incomplete, or if fulfilling any of them becomes impossible, this shall not affect the validity of the other parts. In such a case, the invalid provision shall be replaced by a permissible valid provision that achieves the intended purpose of the contract in a legally permissible manner and that comes, according to its content, as close as possible to the original intention. The same shall apply in the event of a loophole.

Applicable law and place of jurisdiction

These terms and conditions are subject to Swiss law. The place of jurisdiction is Basel-Stadt.
