The University of Basel Language Center
We—the members of the University of Basel Language Center—stand for multilingualism and live and love linguistic diversity. In our courses, we cultivate language acquisition and communication skills for studying, teaching, research, and work. We are an active member of networks of language centers at universities in Switzerland (SSH/CHES) and in Europe (CercleS).
You—students, researchers, employees, and alumni of the University of Basel and students from other universities in Switzerland and Eucor universities—come and go at our center. Providing you with expert advice and language assessment is particularly important to us. We strive to determine your needs as best as possible and are continually developing our overall program through evaluations and ongoing discussions with the faculties and departments.
We offer general and discipline-specific language courses—such as French for Lawyers or Italian for Doctors—in addition to formats that target one skill, such as writing or oral communication.
Domestic and cross-border mobility enliven our language center at the Dreiländerleck. The national languages German (and Swiss German), French, and Italian therefore receive special emphasis in our program. As the languages for study and work at the University of Basel, German and English are central to the academic and social integration of international and domestic students, researchers, and staff. We respond to their importance in research, teaching, and international mobility with courses tailored to the needs of faculties, departments, and associated institutions.
If you are looking for support in preparing linguistically, socially, and culturally for an exchange semester, internship, research stay, or job in Switzerland or abroad, our language courses will ready you for the challenges of everyday university life on either side of the border.
Multilingualism is a plus—in the academic and professional context of our globalized world, it is indispensable! We foster your multilingualism through a wide range of languages, from Arabic to Japanese to Hungarian. Our international team of teachers and administrators work together with you to make the Language Center a place of intercultural encounter and exchange. We look forward to meeting you!
