All members of the University of Basel who are interested in the funding of academic and scientific writing skills are invited to the next semester meeting of the Writing Network.
The informal network offers the opportunity to get in touch with each other and to share knowledge and experiences. Once a semester, current research projects and practical examples of writing didactics and writing promotion are presented and discussed.
Date and time: Thursday, May 16, 2024, 12:15-13:45
Location: Language Center, Totentanz 17, Room 00.004
Subjects:
1. "Academic writing with digital tools - more than ChatGPT, DeepL and Co": Presentation of the lecture series with practical course organized by the Network Writing for HS 2024
We would be happy to inform you about the goals and content of the event series. The initiative has been welcomed by the VR Lehre and the Offices of the Dean of Studies and is supported by the Digital Literacies project. It will be anchored in the course directories at the German Department. The overall aim of the event is to promote students' writing skills, with a focal area on the use of digital resources and AI tools to improve the writing process and output. Some of the subjects to be covered are: Stages of the writing process, writing strategies, literature reviews, building blocks of formulation, effective prompts for AI, text correction to legal issues, and academic integrity.
2. "Building blocks of formulation when writing an introduction": Short input and discussion on a contribution for the upcoming lecture series by Beatrice Mall Grob and Stephan Meyer
Empirical linguistics provides extensive data on the structure of academic texts and the phrases used in the respective parts of the text. In our article, we will focus on introductions and the typical phrases that structure them. We will also introduce digital resources that students can use when writing introductions and - as part of the subsequent practical course - try them out. We would be happy to give you an insight into the planning of our contribution as a "work in progress" and look forward to an exchange on the subject.
