21.03.2023: Computational Support for Learning Argumentative Writing in Digital School Education (Input with Discussion)

After the pandemic-related break, the Writing Network is pleased to invite everyone interested in promoting writing at the University of Basel to resume our regular exchange. We will start with a short input by Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Henning Wachsmuth (Institute for Artificial Intelligence, Leibniz Universität Hannover), followed by a discussion in which we will address the relevance of the rapidly growing use of AI for the development and improvement of argumentative writing at the university.

Date and time: Tuesday, March 21, 2023, 9:00-9:45 a.m. (we start promptly at 9:00 a.m. s.t.)

Location: German Seminar, seminar room 4 (first floor)

Registration: via e-mail to writing@clutterunibas.ch

Abstract:

In an ongoing research project, we study how to support German school students in learning to write argumentative texts through automatics methods that provide developmental feedback. These methods assess and explain which aspects of a text are good, which need to be improved, and how to improve them, adapted to the student’s learning stage. To this end, we model the micro and macro structure of German argumentative learner texts, in order to assess what learning stage a learner is in, and to then give feedback to the learner. In the talk, I will give an overview of the current state of the project and present the main results and findings we obtained so far.
