Well-Being in International Relocations – A Family Affair?

Wednesday, 29th April 2026, [UHRZEIT] @ Foyer Public, Theater Basel

International mobility affects more than careers – it reshapes family systems, identities, and support networks. Based on research and personal insight, this session explores key stressors, resilience factors, and what kind of support is available for international families.

Relocating for academia is more than a career step – it is a life transition that affects partners, children, identities and entire support systems.

In this Café International session, we explore well-being and belonging for international scholars and their families. Drawing on research from the Home Abroad Program as well as personal experience, the afternoon highlights some key stressors in international mobility: isolation, shifting family roles, partner career disruption, children’s adaptation, the emotional impact of starting over and more.

What happens when these challenges remain unspoken or unsupported? How can professional success coexist with private strain? And what helps individuals and families adjust?

We will reflect on coping strategies, resilience factors and institutional resources, and discuss what employers and departments (can) do to support the whole family system. The session combines short input with interactive exchange and shared reflections.
